Machakos town was established in 1887 as the first administrative centre for the British colony in Kenya, Later the capital was moved to Nairobi as Machakos by-passed the Kenya-Uganda railway.

Today it serves as the headquarter of Machakos county one of the 47 counties in Kenya.
